Graphics and Sound 9/10

When compared to other games on PS4 or Xbox One, Fortnite is inferior to some photorealistic action titles. But in the mobile world, with the same visuals, Fortnite is king. It features realistic movements in a big open world, with diverse biomes, convincing characters, and immersive feeling (despite third person view). The environment is highly detailed and fully interactive, and camera follows you at any speed and to any place.

So are the sounds. Much better than built-in speakers can reproduce, they scream for external speakers, wired ones preferred to avoid delay, so you can hear nearest gunfights or enemies running close. With no musical masterpieces or memetic phrases, it’s just as decent as it takes.

Controls 9/10

The original control system is emulating a gamepad with virtual controls upon the touchscreen. The left area hosts the virtual joystick that controls your movements. The area to the right is used to control the camera with swipes as you do with your right joystick on a gamepad or with mouse movements on a PC. There are some buttons for switching weapons, jumping, hiding, building, or hitting/shooting. A special section shows how much materials you have.

You can enhance your experience by connecting an external third-party controller, but it has to be MFi-marked. Unlike Android users who can freely buy cheap gamepads and connect them easily, iOS fans will have to spend more on a decent device.

Gameplay 10/10

The idea of Battle Royale is combined with tactical fortification action, and it makes the game stand out. As 100 of you deploy on the island, you need to search for some better weapon to replace your pickaxe you only have initially. There are rifles, shotguns, grenades, ammo, medicines, and all necessary for killing and surviving. The storm is coming, drawing survivors closer to each other for the final combat, so no one can hide.

But don’t hide away your pickaxe: you’ll need it for collecting materials to build. Wood, stone, and metal can be obtained from any object and used to build you shelters or towers of walls, roofs, and stairs. You can use your buildings to hide or to track enemies.

The greatest idea is that no one can just buy an advantage. Paid Battle pass is here, but it only unlocks appearance tweaks and harder missions. Character stats are the same for everyone, and progress only affects the player’s skills.

Lasting Appeal 9/10

Though the genre remains unchanged, and no progress holds you from quitting, the developers do their best to keep the game evolving. Each new season they bring in new weapons and moves, new biomes and townships, new enemies and missions. The best of innovations enter the defaults, the worst get vaulted, and the game is constantly changing.

Still one of the best Battle Royale games, it evolves constantly. If you download Fortnite after several months out, it will feel like a brand new game with the same engine.
